Soda firing is an atmospheric process where, once the kiln is hot, potters introduce vaporized sodium compounds, like soda ash, right into the fire.

Instead of painting on a traditional glaze, the flames and sodium vapors react with the silica in the clay to create a beautiful, unpredictable glassy coating on the pottery's surface.
